Folks who are regular visitors know how much we love well executed screens, so here is the screen of the day...
Seen during the Valparaiso/Milwaukee game. And if you came here based on the post title expecting to see orgasms we're sorry. But welcome anyways!

A weakness in Jimmer Fredette's game
Someone came up to one of us a week or so ago and said the following:
"Ok, so I watched a couple of BYU games and yeah that Fredette guy can ball real good. But what I really noticed is that he whines a LOT. He always gets mad when he doesn't get a foul call."
Now this person has an east coast bias (her team resides in the Big East Conference). So we somewhat dismissed it because we're in love with Jimmer just like most people, as long as he is not playing us. But then we came across this:
Fredette let the officials know how he felt about their handling of the (Utah) game's very physical affairs. Before Fredette could attempt his free throw to complete the three-point play, umpire Mike Reed advised BYU coach Dave Rose to remove his point guard from the game, in light of his vocal unhappiness and increasing frustration level.
Well then. Some chinks in the armor are developing. And we shouldn't have been quick to dismiss what that woman was saying. So hey TCU and Colorado State, heed this well. Ok, maybe only Colorado State.

2-3 Zone don't matter if you can't score!
Syracuse 72 - USF 49
One thing we noticed is that South Florida properly defended against Syracuse's vaunted 2-3 Zone with aggressive cuts and screens. But none of that matters if you can't put the damn ball into the bucket... Oi vey.

A complete game

San Diego St 90 - UC Santa Barbara 64
It happened. It finally happened. An excellent showing by the Aztecs in all phases of the game. Excellent field goal shots (56%), 3 point shots (50%), free throw shots (82%!), rebounds, everything. Our story has always been... Wait, we'll just let one of the players explain:
"Usually the first half is always kind of lazy for us, we always start off kind of slow and then we pick it up in the second half."
- SDSU forward Billy White
There. And we all know that you can't keep winning games like that. They'll be one team that will produce such a lead going into the half that you can't overcome it in the second. But as the flow chart shows we were hitting on all cylinders last night -

This is how you play to win the game. Now only if we can do this every game.

Pay attention, Sparty
You know, on an in-bound pass you don't really need to find your fellow player to pass to. You could throw it to one of the opposing players. The trick is you gotta hope that opposing player does not catch the ball. But who would do that in a close game, right? That's suicide...
Betcha $5 that Izzo is having that Michigan State player run Pyramids drills until he pukes right now.

Blocked!
Blocked
Pronunciation: \ˈbläkt\–verb (used with object)
To obstruct (someone or something) by placing obstacles in the way (sometimes fol. by up): to block one's exit; to block up a passage; to bitch smack someone going to the hole.
So lay down, the threat is real, homie.

Hey E. Tennessee State, you wanna beat Pitt?
Frustrate DeJuan Blair. Frustrate him like there is no tomorrow. Because if you don't, there literally won't be a tomorrow for you.
In each of the top-seeded Panthers’ four losses this season, including last week’s Big East quarterfinal defeat to rival West Virginia, Blair was in foul trouble. When Blair and his 15.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game aren’t on the floor, Pitt isn’t the same team.
Co-captain Sam Young sat down with Blair after the Big East tournament and all but pleaded with him to stay out of foul trouble.
Blair has been on the bench more than usual in three of Pitt’s last five games, and he showed his exasperation with his foul predicament after the 74-60 loss to West Virginia.
Gold we tell ya! Pure gold. If you guys win we accept cash, checks or major credit cards. But keep in mind UConn tried to do the same thing and failed.

The Monday after
Yes, I agree with everyone saying that Davidson vs. Kansas was the most exciting game of the weekend.
Yes, I agree with everyone that having 4 #1 seeds in the Final Four makes for a memorable and justifiable tournament.
Lets get on with the news, shall we?
Wake Forest recruit practices his drive-by skills before the 2008-2009 season.
One of the most highly regarded recruits to ever sign a letter of intent to play basketball for Wake Forest was arrested Friday night by the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s deputies on charges of assault and trespassing.
Al-Farouq Aminu, a 6-8 Parade All-America from Norcross High School in suburban Atlanta, was accused of shooting an unnamed female with a BB gun from inside a vehicle...
Shit, that ho probably owed him money. She's lucky he is still a BB gun "apprentice" and not a glock wielding graduate from the school of thuggery. For some reason the song "Still D.R.E." is playing in my head.
Yeah! That's how we roll in... Winston-Salem?
Next up, the brave Derrick Rose is like a little bitch around needles.
Rose came stalking out of the locker room, yelling, ranting and on the verge of tears. He only calmed down when team officials agreed to glue the cut and forget the stitches.
"I'm terrified of needles," he said. "If I would have got stitches, they would have had to stick a needle right above my eye. So I was pouting, stormed out of the locker room. I was mad."
Oh, this phobia has a very strong history the Memphis player...
When he was 7, he fell off his bicycle and another child ran over his head with a bike, causing a large wound on the back of his head.
"The nurses at the hospital were holding him down and he was so scared he broke away from them and got up," his mother, Brenda Rose, said in a phone interview. "So they had to tape him to the gurney and do the stitches.
Wow! I think UCLA just found a way to get into his head this coming Saturday. All the Bruins students should bring syringes. Start waving them around whenever Rose goes to the free throw line.
That would be HI-larious.

Everyone loves a winner no matter what
Dateline - Thursday, February 28, 2008
Inside a huge, plush, elegantly designed and appointed office with a lit fireplace on the grounds of Bradley University -
The Players:
Bradley Athletic Director Ken Kavanagh
Bradley Basketball Head Coach Jim Les
(Huge mahogany doors open)
Ken Kavanagh: Jim, is that you? Come on in old chap!
Jim Les: Thank you, Ken. You sent for me?
Ken: Yes, yes I did. Wanted to talk about the program.
Jim: I know we are 17 - 13, but I have a feeling we might be a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament.
Ken: I know! If we could just get past pesky Creighton.
Jim: Exactly. It's an away game so we will need a lot of fan support. You know we don't travel well.
Ken: You'll need more than fan support! You'll need a miracle to beat them on their home court!
Jim: Well sir, I don't want to go that far. I have some good plans that may fluster Creighton's motion screens and...
Ken: Stop with the horseshit.
Jim: Sir?
Ken: Reinstate the batterer point guard.
Jim: But sir! Daniel was arrested for popping his girl in the mouth! His bail was set at $3,000!
Ken: And he's also our leading scorer. And we've been losing games without him. *rubs temples in frustration* Jim, let me try to make this simple for you. You like coaching this team, right?
Jim: Yes sir.
Ken: And you want to coach NEXT year, right?
Jim: Ummmm, yes sir.
Ken: Am I making myself clear?
Jim (with defeat in his voice): Yes sir. I'll give Ruffin a call.
Ken: Good. Now go.

The wise one speaks
Dickie V gives us some sage advice on how to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship...
"To win an national championship, you better be able to play on the defensive side of the floor.
If you want to win a national title... get your players to buy into playing defense as a team."
Words of wisdom, that stuff is GOLD! Coaches need to make note of this!

John Gardner likely answer for loss of DaShaun Wood at Wright State? Me no think so. Me thinks it's NIT time after that devastating loss.![]()
D-Wood: Enjoying the benefits playing b-ball in Europe.
The Charlottesville Cardinals recently beat the living tar out of Virginia. Former Cardinals coach Tom Vandever was quoted as saying "We hammered them." The Cardinals are now being mentioned as a POWERHOUSE basketball program. Y'all better start figuring them in the 25 polls.
How could this tiny program reach national prominence so quickly? They put their opponents in wheelchairs.
Say my name, BITCH!
Very cool story nonetheless.
NCAA Hoops Today points to a great article about the Gonzaga Flex. It's just like the Princeton Motion (my fav) but without the perpetual weak screen, the absence of which does tend to slow down play somewhat IMO.
Now, time for the humiliation moment of the day...
Here's an article about how top ranked teams don't want to play SDSU at home. The "excuse" was that we didn't have the room to schedule them in. The truth was that we sucked ass so much last year no team will give us the time of day.
*hangs head in shame*

Today's lesson
The Princeton Offense.
Run very well a year or so ago by Air Force. It is simplistic in how it confounds the opposing defense. Forces you to learn the notion of teamwork (fuck you, NBA).
And now, legendary Princeton Coach Pete Carril.
Be-a-u-ti-ful.
