Non blogpoll poll

Hey kids, the 2008-2009 preseason top 25 coaches' poll is out!

UNC at #1? Natch... UConn at #2? WTF?! Duke at #5? Meh... Kansas at #23? What have you done for me lately?

Everything else does not surprise or deserve much comment from us. The funny thing is that we have to start shaking off college football around this time which causes some confusion. Por ejemplo, when we saw Arizona State at #15 we were like "Say whaaaaa?! They suck!" Then we had to remind ourselves that we were thinking about football. Apologies.

I think the preseason blogpoll will be about the same as the coaches' for the first six team. But expect absolute chaos after that such is the case with these things. Voting takes place for said blogpoll November 3rd with the eventual release later that week or early next week. Stay tuned my friends.

2 miles an hour so everybody sees you

"Headlights blinking cause your battery's drained,
Armor All on your tires and a big gold chain.
They tell me don't drink and drive, I say what is this?
Pass the Heineken and mind your business.
Roll up a fat one and pass it around."

- LL Cool J
The Booming System

Looks like someone took that song a little too far...

(Southeast Missouri State forward) Calvin Williams was suspended from the team Saturday following his arrest early Friday morning on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, driving without a license and driving without headlights.

(A Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman said) Williams consented to a search of the vehicle. During the search, a bag of leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, was found.

The best was that Missouri State's AD Cindy Gannon was at a wedding when she found out about this mess.

Psssst... Your basketball team's season just got a whole lot worse.

Bo Ryan, entertainer

You know, at first this Wisconsin midnight madness clip caught us by surprise... Crank dat.

Bu then we thought "Hasn't coach Bo always been a 'ham' for the camera?"

Yeah, thank you YouTube. Always keeping things in check. Coach, maybe one day you can funnel that passion for making people smile into a winning season...

Btw, if we are starting to post on the weekend that means we are getting closer and closer to the start of college hoops!

Lute Olson is a spaz

Well, lets see here...

First the Arizona head coach quits on his team to get a divorce. Then he fires his interim coach for failing to live up to his expectations while he is on leave getting a divorce. Then he comes back with a soon to be NEW wife.

Now he quits on the Wildcats again...

Arizona basketball players filed out of their new practice facility Thursday night with a look of bewilderment.

Their coach, Lute Olson, had just announced his retirement while they were in practice — less than a month before their first regular-season game.

Sakes alive these kids deserved better than this guy. Can you sense the W - T - F in their words?

"I don't know (anything)," forward-center Jordan Hill said before UA began practice.

"I haven't played for him, so I can't talk about him," said sophomore Jamelle Horne, who played under interim coach Kevin O'Neill last season. "But I still don't know what's going on."

"I hope he's all right," said David Bagga, a UA senior walk- on. "I'm still kind of lost with what's going on. I hope he is OK..."

Now the parents!

(Freshman Jeff) Withey's mom, Debbie, said she was a bit upset she had to hear the news of Olson's resignation...

"I just got done crying to my husband," she said Thursday. "I feel totally stupid that (being a top 30 recruit) that we stuck it out. And we're the stupid ones. We listened to people."

Added the mother: "I felt betrayed..."

Lute, you'll burn in hell for this.

That's right baby...

UPDATE: Olson had a stroke, so he stepped down. Lo siento, Lute.
(HT: Rush the Court)

In other less dramatic news, Ohio U forward Maurice Pearson has been suspended for shooting sorority chicks on campus with an Airsoft gun. We'll just leave that with no comment. Happy Friday.

Political rant, move on...

Hey, we warned you.

Anyhoo, we are just stunned right now on these three issues...

President Barack Obama or President John McCain? Virtual dead heat.

California Proposition 4 which would require parental notification before the termination of a minor’s pregnancy. Virtual dead heat.

California Proposition 8 which would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Virtual dead heat.

These things seemed to us to be the most lopsided, either they would win by 80% or lose by 80% type deals. How could they fall under the "numb existence" principle?! This is Americans and Californians saying as a whole "Meh... It doesn't matter one way or another. Pass me a beer and the remote, American Idol is on."

Meh...

Breaking News: March to Madness sells out!

Well, kind of. Starting the middle of November we will also be writing daily college b-ball missives for Sports Illustrated, along side the likes of Luke Winn and Seth Davis. More to come. By the way, we're also available for weddings and bar mitzvahs.

So, any hoops news today? Yeah, there's some. Like recent University of Northern Iowa recruit Brian Conway getting off on the good foot in life by mugging some guy and firing slugs at God to show that he was serious.

According to court records, Conway showed a handgun and demanded the male victim provide his ATM card and pin. In doing so, Conway put the man in a headlock and dragged him toward the ATM.

Once the male victim said he couldn’t locate his card, Conway fired a shot into the air.

(Conway) was charged with armed robbery Wednesday and was being held on $100,000 bond...

Also, something or other (read: misdemeanor petty larceny) happened with some players at some WAC school (read: Nevada Wolf Pack). Some coach has no comment and needs more information but will indefinitely suspend the players anyways.

London Giles, a guard from Dallas, Texas, and Ahyaro Phillips, a forward from New Orleans, were suspended along with the junior Fields after their release by Sparks police following an incident on Wednesday.

Nevada coach Mark Fox says he is "extremely disappointed" to learn of the citations. He says he doesn't have all the facts so doesn't have anything else to say at this time.

So there.

Finally, on a personal note we went to Las Vegas over the weekend and had lunch at Dick's Last Resort. It was the first time we had been but we knew the drill. The staff is suppose to be rude to you and crack wise. Sounds like fun! Look man, we work hard for our money. If we wanted to get that kind of treatment we could just have dinner with the wives at home. We go out to restaurants to have good food and good service. But we said what the hell and tried to rationalize it by thinking that the food HAD to be good because no one would subject themselves to bad food AND bad service. Right?

The worse crap we've had in recent memory. Horrible. Couldn't even finish it and we were drunk AND hungry! Best was that after we gave up on trying to consume this "meal" we got the check which instructed us to "Suck It".

Nice. We felt used and stupid. Hope that place goes bankrupt.

Mountain West = Dangerous

And not on the court unfortunately...

Let's start off with poor hapless BYU forward Chris Collinsworth who was jacked up because he wanted to spread the beliefs of the Latter Day Saints in Sydney, Australia.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Ferguson was stabbed in his hand, tendons were cut and he required surgery. Jeff Collinsworth said that his son did not require surgery. There were, however, stab wounds close to his son's kidney so multiple scans of his internal organs were conducted to ensure that he didn't have any internal injuries.

Mormons, the ultimate threat to modern civilization?

Also we have our alma mater proving once again that we will continue to strive to find ways to throw away the season...

San Diego State coach Steve Fisher has indefinitely suspended senior forward Lorrenzo Wade, who pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of stealing a television from a woman's home.

Wade was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference pick last season, when he was San Diego State's leading scorer with an average of 14.8 points. He was named to the preseason All-MWC team on Tuesday.

Le sigh...

At least he wasn't driving

UAB guard and C-USA preseason player of the year Robert Vaden has been arrested for drinking and shoving.

A Bloomington officer was driving north on Walnut when he saw a subject in a red shirt pushing people, Canada said.

The officer approached Vaden, 23, and reported his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and his breath smelled like alcohol.

Apparently he was hanging around his former school Indiana University when this happened. Funny thing is that he is currently on probation from drinking and shoving last year! Just can't get enough, huh? No worries though, everyone does it. And then films it. And then sells it.

And it's almost illegal

Too early to prognosticate?

CHARLEY: I always had a bet down for you. You saw some money.
TERRY: You don't understand! I could've been a contender. I could've had class and been somebody. Real class. Instead of a bum, let's face it, which is what I am.

Ah, the Blue Devils. Our asses (and wallets) have been hung in a sling trying to predict how Duke will do each season. We were really high on them last season, but bounce bounce they went out of the tournament. Early. Again. The perennial contenders that fall short year after year.

Lute Olson is the MAN

Hey, did ya know Lute's got a new gal?!

Well, that was the first thing that came up when I googled Kelly Pugnea.

(HT: Arizona Daily Star)

Ok, this is her. Kinda looks the same though.

Maybe now the Silver Fox can get back to the business of guiding the Wildcats to another March Madness meltdown.

But what has he done lately?

Is Florida's Billy Donovan worth $3.25 million a year? Seriously. We know he won back-to-back titles. But that was in 2006-2007. We're having this conversation in 2008. It's a different world.

The 2-time defending national champs are nowhere near where they were the last 2 seasons.

Ok, let us compare. Is Donovan worth more than say:

Memphis' John Calipari - $2.3 million a year (NCAA 2008 Championship runner up)
Kansas' Bill Self - $3 million a year (NCAA 2008 Champs)

Plus this guy nearly bailed on the Gators mere months ago. Are you sure guys?

Too early to prognosticate?

Someone once said, there is a difference between a failure and a fiasco. A failure is simply the non-presence of of success. Any fool can accomplish failure. But a fiasco, a fiasco is a disaster of mythic proportions. A fiasco is a folk-tale told to others, that makes other people feel more alive... because it didn't happen to them.

Western Kentucky was a major surprise last year going deep into the dance. Don't expect that this year.

How does THAT feel?!

This kid clearly runs his parents. You gotta ask yourself, what would you do if your kid did this?

All we can say is that our reaction would be legendary in the "child abuse" department
