Eight is never enough

Virginia Commonwealth 72 - Florida State 71 Overtime

This is what it's all about. Both teams were neck and neck throughout the contest with Florida tying it at the end of regulation. Then with 7 seconds left in overtime VCU hits an EASY layup to move ahead 72 to 71. There were still 7 seconds on the clock and Florida State's ball but the Rams Jamie Skeen blocked any chance the Seminoles had to win the game.

If there were ANY lingering doubts about VCU belonging in the tournament (not likely at this point but still) they have now been erased with authority. The Rams have proven that they can blow out opponents or grind out wins. Borrowing from an old joke about VCU they didn't belong in the field of 64. They belonged in the Elite Eight, although some are saying they will be a sacrificial lamb lame for Kansas. And no matter what coach Shaka Smart is a wanted man after this is all said and done.

Hollywood Ending

San Diego State 71 - Temple 64 Double Rainbow

We are mentally exhausted. So yeah, there was a game yesterday with SDSU playing Temple. And the Aztecs were doing good for awhile...

But then we reverted back to "classic SDSU". Game tied in the final seconds and we had a chance at the game winning shot. We missed.

Overtime. After a seesaw battle the game became tied again and once again SDSU had the chance at the game winning shot. We missed.

Double overtime. This time we turned into "Aztecs 2.0" and managed to build a permanent lead for the win. So yes, San Diego State University is headed to the Sweet Sixteen in Anaheim, California. Glory Be. Like we said we are exhausted but we're still partying knowing that UConn may await us.

Princeton wins on last second shot

ESPN producers are so excited they interrupt their own broadcast during the UTSA/McNeese State game ...

So the Tigers are dancing. And Harvard is sullen again. Game talk heyah.

The south shall fall again

Alabama hurt themselves today...

We can't believe we are about to say this about an SEC contest but that was exciting, close game. Alabama has a curious case of being good but not being able to make the tournament. There was a part of all of us who were rooting for the Tide to beat 24th ranked Vanderbilt because doing so would STILL not get them in.

But that all changes now with the 81 to 77 loss at the hands of the Commodores. Oh well, fun while it lasted.

Exclusive: Gus Johnson to call SDSU/BYU game Feb 26

That's right, citizens. We already gave the guidelines on what would make this game epic. Let's hope that happens but if not it will still be awesome.

Go Aztecs.

Almost only counts in...

We have to hand it to Penn State. Beating the 18th and 22nd ranked teams in the country is impressive. Then they go up to #1 ranked Ohio State and lose 66 to 69 on a last second 3 point shot by Buckeyes forward Jared Sullinger. Last night they go into 13th ranked Purdue and once again lose on a last second shot by Boilermaker forward JaJuan Johnson, 62 to 63.

If effort counted the Nittany Lions would be ranked 25th in the country!

But it doesn't.

Sad.

Game of the week of the year of the century

#3 Syracuse University Orange at #4 University of Pittsburgh Panthers

We have been unofficially, now officially on record in saying that Syracuse is overrated. Even Orange coach Jim Boeheim said so. Out of all the elite teams we feel Syracuse had the weakest schedule with the most unimpressive wins wins against powerhouses like Canisius, Detroit, William & Mary and Iona. Tonight will show one of three things:

1) A Pitt win will show the Panthers continuing to demonstrate good road victories
2) An Orange win will show they deserves to be ranked this high
3) An Orange loss will show they are who we thought they were

May the spirit of Carmelo be with them.

Tighter than an 18 year old virgin

(A) Notre Dame 73 - Connecticut 70
(B) Pittsburgh 83 - Providence 79

These were two very close very exciting games. Not bad for a Tuesday.

Game A - What will forever mark this game was UConn guard Shabazz Napier's time out call with 3.8 seconds left. The refs seemed to ignore his cries so he had to make an off balanced 3 point shot. Napier was seen begging with the refs even after the game was over. The Huskies could not catch up with the Irish even with Kemba Walker's 19 points. The wheels have not fallen off the UConn wagon yet, but some of the shine has faded.

Game B - Note to Pitt coach Jamie Dixon: Only use center Gary McGhee in the second half of games. Through a series of blunders and fouls the Panthers let Providence back into this game with 1 minute left. Why? For the drama! Friars fans were thinking back to 2009 but the McGhee/Woodall combo quickly snapped Providence back to reality.

A Baby Story

Freshmen players on Kentucky: Terrence Jones, Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb
Freshmen players on North Carolina: Harrison Barnes, Reggie Bullock

North Carolina 75 - Kentucky 73

Well. That was more exciting than what we originally thought. This wasn't really a situation of which team played the best. It was more than a situation of which team screwed up the least. With two awfully young teams you had your missed shots galore, passes to Casper and boneheaded fouls (if Kentucky didn't foul Tyler Zeller in those final 30 seconds the result would have been different). Ultimately the Tar Heels screwed up the least. Congrats. And don't call it an upset.

What made that game even better was that the great Gus Johnson was calling it.
