The NIT

Otherwise known as that other national tournament...

Hey Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech is the number one overall seed in the National Invitation Tournament. Who cares about beating Duke, your 21-11 record and your Sagarin rating of 40. Welcome!

Hey Bama, turn that frown upside down. Who cares about beating Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia TWICE with your KenPom ranking of 51. Coastal Carolina awaits.

Hey Colorado, why fret over not being selected to the NCAA Tourney with beating Kansas State (twice) and also Texas. And you have an RPI of 61? Well now you've got your own bracket named after you and Texas Southern in the first round. Congrats!

Harvard, oh Harvard. What haven't you done? Beaten Colorado, you have a 23-6 record, a RPI of 35 and a Sagarin ranking of 63. How about a consolation 6th seed and Oklahoma State in your first game?

If you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Good luck!

Minnesota's final chapter

Start spreading the news, we're leaving this March
Looks like we're a part of it - the N.I.T
These shiny black shoes, are longing to stray
But first let's get to it - the N.I.T

We wanna wake up in a city, that doesn’t sleep
And find we're king of the hill - top of the heap

These Twin City blues, are melting away
The Gophers will make a new start of it - at The Garden in New York
If we can make it there, could we make it anywhere?
It’s up to you - Madison Square, New York

Weekend game in review

On the Cardinals side they are gnashing their teeth and beating their breasts. One the Friars side men, women and even babies are celebrating their win over 15th ranked Louisville 72 to 67.

This ends a six game losing streak by Providence and gives them a "marquee" win to boot. Very NIT worthy indeed.

Game watched last night

1) Dayton 56, Richmond 60

The Dayton Flyers seem to be "suck on" the NIT in their continued quest for "failure". Dayton held the lead for 68% of the game and at times utterly confused the Spiders. Richmond got a great present for Senior Day. A near certain at-large bid.

Wait, what about our win against Xavier?

Well coach Gregory, you also lost against Saint Joseph's. And Duquesne. Your time is up.

No wise man has the power to reason away

Our viewing schedule:

SATURDAY
Kentucky at Tennessee (game of interest) - 12 pm
Texas at Texas A&M - 2 pm
Cincinnati at West Virginia - 2 pm
VCU at Old Dominion - 4 pm
Villanova at Syracuse - 8 pm

SUNDAY
Marquette at Seton Hall - 12 pm
Richmond at Xavier (game of interest) - 1 pm
Michigan St. at Purdue - 4 pm
Duke at Virginia - 7:45 pm

Now we get to the part of the season where people start grasping at straws on why their team should get into the tournament, hence the Doobie Brothers reference. We believe SDSU will totally get in based on quality wins and their RPI. Yeah.

We're talking about the NIT of course. Go Aztecs...

San Diego State lost??

We told you so.

Yeah, the picture has nothing to do with the Aztecs loss against BYU. Sue us.

Hello NIT.

Games Watched Last Night

1) Notre Dame at Seton Hall

And that's that. The bad news Irish lose Luke Harangody and yet another game in one night. At least they made Seton Hall happy.

2) Michigan at Minnesota

Nice road win for the Wolverines. As if it matters. At all.

Playing at their level

Start spreading the news...

We mentioned previously that the Mountain West should not play in the NCAA Tournament because of the vast talent differential, and it looks like that is playing out. BYU and Utah are sitting on their hands at home after being beaten in the first round of March Madness while SDSU is in the final four of the NIT.

Maybe next year we should not accept a bid to be in the big dance but instead ask the NIT folks to place all (or most) of the MWC teams.
